While polls show widespread resistance to aid that will help hungry and homeless Gazans, there is an Israeli constituency that wants to help.
Each side has strikingly different perspectives on the deaths and victimization of the other side’s civilians.
I, for one, wish a sustained ceasefire was the answer. My heart tells me the violence should stop. But my head tells me an extended ceasefire would enable Hamas leaders to remain in power, retain their current arsenal, recruit combatants to replace those who were killed and continue to threaten Israel.
While protesting now against their extremist government, Israelis also need to resolve the Palestinian conflict in the future. That means finding new solutions to challenges like the Palestinian call for a “Right of Return.”
Will the lessons learned from the battle to salvage Israeli democracy generate more support for Palestinian democratic rights?
