Progressive Academics Work at CUNY to Defeat Israel Boycott, Encourage Engagement for Peace

By TTN Blog

As part of its North American educational and advocacy campaign against academic boycotts of Israel and for broad liberal and progressive engagement in seeking peace and justice for Israelis and Palestinians, the Academic Advisory Council (AAC) of The Third Narrative has been very active on the campus of City University of New York (CUNY).  On Friday night, September 12, the Doctoral Students Council (DSC) of the CUNY Graduate Center decided to temporarily table a resolution endorsing a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. The AAC engaged with students at this meeting and welcomed the decision to delay the vote until a time when observant Jews, who cannot attend a Sabbath meeting, could have a voice in the discussion.

As part of the follow-up, working with doctoral students at CUNY, the AAC helped plan and organize a Panel Discussion on Monday, October 6, 2014 that was sponsored by Graduate Center Jewish Connection Group and co-sponsored by CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, GC Committee for the Study of Religion, American Studies Certificate Program, and the Programs in Physics, Sociology and Mathematics.

Thoughtful presentations were provided by AAC Founding Members Eric Alterman (Brooklyn College), Todd Gitlin (Columbia University) and Susannah Heschel (Dartmouth University) that looked at the practical, moral, political and social aspects of the pending boycott resolution.  Lively discussion and debate with the CUNY Graduate Center moderators and the audience ensued.

Check out this video to hear the presentations and discussions as they were live-streamed from the event.
